FLAMMENT KAY FROG PUFF AND ANTIGRAMMARTRON
Paper Balloon delivered this Creative Partnership with St Thomas Primary school in Guildford, Surrey in 2011.
In responding to the enquiry question; “Can pupils’ use of vocabulary and punctuation become more effective through creativity?” the project worked with years 2 and 3 on developing pupil use of vocabulary and punctuation. Pupils took part in workshops over 6 weeks with Alex and Darren (pictured below) that examined vocabulary and punctuation using different learning skills; including music, group problem solving and kinaesthetic learning; all the while engaging with a narrative that pitted their wits against the evil Antigrammartron.
Workshops included a Grammar Assault Course that saw parents and carers performing somersaults and beam-balances alongside the children, creating a Grammar Superhero and foiling the dastardly villain’s plans for world domination. Following the successful project Alex and Darren facilitated an assembly attended by the children’s families where they saw off the bad guys with a final ‘Word Whirlwind’. Story Stew also led a teaching INSET day on using narrative to frame programmes of work.

"Through the use of narrative Darren and Alex were able to make the otherwise dry subject of punctuation and grammar exciting and engaging. Pupils loved their learning. By using story, song and drama the children explored different aspects of language. The impact on their own standard of writing was profound. The children’s creativity skills flourished; collaborative working and learning to “take a risk” were key skills that the pupils developed. "
